Channel3 vs Shopify Catalog

By Channel3

TL;DR: Shopify Catalog (the Global Catalog exposed through Shopify’s UCP and MCP endpoints) gives AI agents a clean, deduplicated view of products sold by eligible Shopify merchants. It is free, well structured, and a good choice if every product you want to recommend lives on Shopify.

Channel3 is a cross-retailer product data API: 100M+ products from 25,000+ brands and retailers — Shopify stores included, but also Nike, Nordstrom, Best Buy, Walmart, and the long tail of retailers that run on other platforms — normalized into one schema with prices, availability, retailer links, and affiliate commission built in.

If your agent is a shopping assistant for the Shopify ecosystem, Shopify Catalog is a strong fit. If your agent has to answer “what’s the best commuter backpack under $100?” with results from the whole market — and you want to earn when the user buys — Channel3 is the product discovery backend built for that.

The core difference: one platform vs. the whole market

Shopify Catalog is a catalog of Shopify. That’s not a knock — Shopify powers millions of storefronts, and the data model is genuinely good: products are clustered under a Universal Product ID, variants carry their own pricing, and each result comes with a direct checkout link. But coverage stops at the platform boundary. Brands that run their own commerce stack, big-box retailers, marketplaces, and department stores simply aren’t in it.

When we ran a “durable commuter backpack under $100” query through it for our API roundup, every result came from a smaller DTC shop. No Nike. No North Face. No Herschel. One result was a demo store on a myshopify.com subdomain; another was priced in Nigerian Naira despite a USD filter. The same query on Channel3 returned Nike, Puma, HP, and The North Face, each with multiple retailer offers attached.

For a product discovery backend, that is the whole question. An agent that can only see one platform will confidently recommend the best option on that platform, which is not the same thing as the best option.

Structured cross-retailer data, without scraping

The obvious way to get beyond a single platform is to scrape retailer sites yourself, or pay a SERP scraper to do it. That trades one problem for another: fragile parsers, inconsistent fields, legal exposure, and a normalization layer you now own forever.

Channel3 sits in between. We ingest product data through direct retailer and affiliate-network relationships and structured feeds, then use multimodal AI to read product pages, match duplicates across merchants, link variants like color and size, and extract attributes. The output is one schema regardless of where the product is sold:

  • Brand as a field. Shopify Catalog has no structured brand — you infer it from the shop name or parse the title. Channel3 returns brand on every product and lets you filter on it.
  • Offers across retailers. One product, many sellers: “$90 at nike.com, $95 at Foot Locker,” each with its own price, availability, and link.
  • Rich filters. Brand, category, gender, price range, availability, retailer, color, and other attributes — not just price, shop, and shipping origin.
  • Continuously refreshed prices and stock. So your agent doesn’t recommend something that sold out last week.

The affiliate angle

Shopify Catalog is free and it returns checkout links, but there is no commission in the response. If your agent drives a sale, the merchant keeps 100% of it and you have no attribution.

Channel3 is built so the people building shopping agents can earn from them. Every offer comes with a monetizable URL, commission rates are exposed per retailer (up to 3–8.4% on typical apparel and electronics offers), and attribution is handled for you — no affiliate network sign-ups, no per-retailer negotiations. The same API call that finds the product is the one that gets you paid when it sells.

Where Shopify Catalog is the right call

To be fair to it: if you are building a Shopify app, an agent for a Shopify merchant network, or an assistant that only needs DTC inventory from Shopify stores, Shopify Catalog is free, first-party, and returns native checkout links. Channel3 doesn’t replace that. It’s for the moment your agent has to look past the platform.
